This isn’t just more brown people protesting…My take on the Delhi protests

…but unfortunately, outside India, in the West, that’s what many may see.  There’s been a dearth of coverage outside the subcontinent regarding the protests taking place right now in Delhi, India.  On 16 December, a 23 year old medical student who we now know as Damini, was riding a bus with her boyfriend.  She was brutally beaten, gang raped, and then thrown out of the bus while it was moving.  So severe was her attack that she had massive organ damage.  It was reported yesterday by Reuters, that she had passed away after being flown to Singapore for additional treatment.  Western media is now paying attention to the story.

Of course, hers not the only gang rape, the only tragic situation.  In India, there are hundreds, maybe more, and because of the media the stories are now getting coverage.  My hope is that these victims realize all the support they have and are not ashamed that their stories are made public.  Social media seemed to have a fairly comprehensive coverage of the events that media here in the States did not.  I was able to talk to some people in Delhi covering the events as well.  Please pass this story on to those fighting for women’s rights, it’s an important story from the world’s largest democracy.

I’ll be updating this post with links and pieces of information, as I can.
